Charlene: I so enjoyed reading your review of the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Company performance. I could see it through your eyes and you nudged me towards looking for music by Jason Moran as well as googling the dance company for the calendar. And the August Wilson Center seems to be a theatrical jewel. Sure hope to read more of your reviews of the arts. You're painting of Pittsburgh life is vivid and vibrant. Socorro

As the husband of one of "The Women of the Hill" I was privileged to enjoy a close-up view of the project beginning with an ongoing report of the production process (courtesy of my wife, Charlene), the cast & crew potluck dinner in my home, culminating in the actual stage performance, and finally the opening night celebration. For me the experience was unexpectedly rewarding and enriching.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and talking with the five uniquely beautiful ladies, each profoundly qualified to tell this story. Their individual and collective public introspection would serve to dispatch much of the conjecture stigmatizing all women of color. Their performance was a beautiful familiarity for those who have "been there" as well as a vivid cultural and social illumination for the entire audience.

As a bonus, I met Mr. Ping Chong and Mr. Talvin Wilks, the directorial battery, who applied their considerable talents and professional experience to grace the August Wilson Center stage with a fresh look at the saga of this city's women. Decades of mischaracterization and misunderstanding were challenged with the real stories told by the real women in a most entertaining and provocative verbal exchange.

The overall performance was very cleverly executed and accompanied at times by tears, laughter and accolades from the audience; many of whom left at the conclusion with a renewed awareness of the past and a greatly improved perspective for the future.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be given the opportunity to share the experience of my childhood in the Hill District with so many people. Not only did the community get a glimpse into the lifestyles and experiences of six dynamic women, but people throughout the entire city were exposed to six personal perspectives of the Historic Hill District. The Producers/Directors, Ping Chong and Talvin Wilkes did an outstanding job of merging the individual expericences of six very different women into a cohesive and wonderfully intergrated common experience. From the very first day of the project rehersal, and as each women entered the room, the excitement grew with every entry. I was immediatly taken back to a time where you definitely knew you were in the Hill and were about to "get this thing started". I was blessed to be a part of this unique undertaking and this experience will be with me for a lifetime. Thanks PING & TALVIN, AWC and THE WOMEN OF THE HILL!
